My Big Fat Italian Festival

Summertime in San Francisco means fog. That’s just the way it is. Thankfully, we have festivals throughout the chilly months to make it all better. One of the biggest festivals in town is the North Beach Festival and North Beach is the heart of Little Italy so this past weekend I came prepared with big energy and a big appetite.

Four blocks are closed off to traffic and are lined with stalls filled with art, jewelry, and clothing you can’t find in chain stores. Shopping and strolling works up an appetite and there are plenty of food vendors on the ready to satisfy your craving for gyros, garlic fries, or teriyaki chicken.

I was on the hunt for pizza and I found the most amazing sausage and onion pizza that made all passerby stop and drool. Yes, it tasted as good as it looks.

To wash down your meal, there is a beer garden everywhere you turn with live music included or in the case of the beer garden my friends and I visited, a priest giving an annual blessing to pets with some promotion of Heineken in the background. No matter the entertainment, the beer gardens are a great place to meet locals, enjoy the sun, and people watch. However, if you want a change of scenery you will have no trouble finding a bar to squeeze into as there is one on almost every corner.

So let us review. Shopping leads to pizza, pizza leads to beer, and now beer leads to cannolis. This doughy pastry filled with sweet creme and chocolate chips topped with powdered sugar is the perfect bookend to the day.

Everyone comes out to the North Beach Festival, whether they are old, young, with families or friends. It’s the kind of festival where strangers can become comrades for the day hanging out in Washington Square Park. If the sun decides to peak out from behind the fog like it did this past weekend, then it makes the party that much better.

One Reason I Want to Go to New Orleans

Is it wrong that one of the main reasons I want to go New Orleans is for the beignets? New Orleans has amazing food that I need to try, or so I’ve seen on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, and while I can’t get to New Orleans tomorrow, I’ve been able to get a taste of their famous beignet right here in my city by the bay.

The Arlequin Cafe just set up a booth at the farmer’s market by my office which could be potentially dangerous. Roll-shaped doughnuts filled with chocolate or nutella that are topped with powered sugar are sold at this stand and I dove straight in for the nutella one. It’s just one of those treats that you know are completely bad for you but you just don’t care because it’s too good.

My beignet by the bay

Enjoying my beignet on the Embarcadero’s waterfront is not too shabby. However, I can’t wait to get to New Orleans for the real deal as I sit at a sidewalk cafe in the French Quarter.

Discussion: Do you have a favorite New Orleans dish that you would recommend?

A Local Girl’s First Visit to Alcatraz

I have lived in San Francisco all my life and had never been to Alcatraz. My friends from college came to visit me last weekend and the one thing they wanted to do was visit “The Rock” and I was more than happy to explore the island with them for the first time.

If you go to Alcatraz, go early. We bought tickets for the 10:30 am ferry to the island a week in advance, which  I also recommend doing because tickets can sell out fast especially on the weekend. It was less crowded in the morning so I could take pictures on the ride over without crowds in the way and when you are walking around the island itself you won’t be marching around in a big group but can roam freely.

You are free to do as you please on the island. You don’t have to walk around in a tour. My friends briefly looked at the museum at the base of the island and walked up the hills to the prison cells. Here you can get an audio guide that is included in the price of your ticket. This was my favorite part of the experience because former inmates themselves spoke on the audio about their time on the island and infamous events were replayed as you walked in the spots where they all happened.

Obviously, the cells are dark, cold, and depressing. The day I visited Alcatraz was an exceptionally sunny and beautiful day that was even more apparent when you stepped outside after you had been walking into and around prison cells. I can’t imagine what the cells must be like on a darker day and after spending just a couple minutes in one cell my self, I can’t image what it must feel like to spend even one night in a cell.

I got to see a view of San Francisco I had never seen before. At the top of the hill, behind the prison cells, is a lookout point of the city that was gorgeous. With the Bay Bridge to my left and the Golden Gate to my right, I loved seeing the perfect rows of hills smack dab in the middle. It was the most perfect view of the city.

It’s a common thing to live in a city your entire life and not once experience it’s main attraction. I’m glad I took the time to finally visit Alcatraz. If you long to travel somewhere far away, remember that there might be something out your front door that is just as worthy of exploring.
