Tales of a Day Tripper #2: Sintra, Portugal

Big cities are fine and dandy, but my Tales of a Day Tripper series shares my experiences of day trips I have taken to smaller nearby towns in Europe. I enjoyed them all and if you haven’t been to some of these places, you may want to add them to your bucket list.

Only a 40 minute drive outside of Lisbon, Sintra is a must see town and I am going to make it really simple for you and point out three top spots to visit as well as a tip on how to get there.

1. Quinta da Regaleira

Owned by many families since the 1800s and now belonging to the town of Sintra, Quinta da Regaleira is an estate consisting of a palace, chapel, and park and it is the park my friends and I spent most of our time exploring. Full of caves, grottoes, and dirt pathways you feel like you are a kid again on some epic adventure. We searched for secret passageways and traversed through pitch black caves and didn’t care for a minute that we were getting lost. With nature at every turn it was a beautiful escape.

2. Pena National Palace

Pena National Palace

This palace sits on top of a hill that overlooks all of Sintra. You could hike up to the very top but if you are not training for a marathon or are not Superman, then it is probably best to drive up there. Vibrant colors and romantic architecture distinguish this former home pf Portugal’s kings and queens. You may walk through the lavishly decorated state rooms and peek inside the bedrooms but the view of Sintra from the palace balcony is the cherry on top. On a clear day, you can see lush green and deep blue across an infinite distance – a breathtaking view.

3. Cabo da Roca

Sometimes you should just sit on a rock and look at the view. Cabo da Roca was hands-down my favorite spot to do just this and is worth a stop on your drive back into Lisbon. Cabo da Roca is the western most point in Europe and has the most unbelievable views of the ocean that I have ever seen. The view was made even more gorgeous with the sun’s rays reflecting onto the water. My friends and I sat on a ledge looking out towards all of this and were completely still. Moments like that gave me perspective on just how important my travels were.

So how did we drive around to all of these places? All thanks go to Traveller’s House hostel in Lisbon. The staff was so incredibly friendly and proud to share their favorite restaurants and sites. They organized the whole day trip to Sintra and our guide and driver Pedro was awesome. He was a young twenty-something just like us so he became a friend eager to know us and teach us about the culture and history of Sintra.  If you are looking for a place to stay in Lisbon, your visit will be exceptional if you bunk at Traveller’s House and let them show you everything Portugal has to offer.

My 3 Best Kept Travel Secrets

Our travel secrets. Whether they be a place, person, or thing, we are willing to share them with others because we want them to enjoy these secrets as much as we did. Tripbase has asked travel writers to share their 3 best kept travel secrets. A chain reaction has started revolving around this project with writers tagging writers and thanks to Suzy Guese for tagging me. I hope you enjoy my 3 secrets because they all hold a special place in my heart for one reason or another.

1. Hamish the Cow

Hamish is actually one of Scotland’s biggest celebrities so he may not be that much of a secret. Almost any tour you take in the Scottish Highlands will make a stop in Killmahog to visit Hamish and feed him some carrots. He’s big, harry, and basically just sits there in the rain, sleet, hail and whatever other weather Scotland decides to throw at him. What’s not to love?

2. Ile de Frioul

My friends and I were in Marseille for a couple days and weren’t sure what to do in town. We went down to the harbor, the center of town, and bought a ticket for a boat ride to Ile de Frioul. The island was very quiet and so we felt like the only 3 people exploring its many paths up hills and into hidden coves. It was our own private adventure and it was a beautiful way to spend a few hours in the south of France.

3. Big Bite

The most amazing chips in London! You know, not Frito lays chips but french fries chips. I’m pretty sure not that many people know about my favorite chips shop because it is a half hour tube ride out of central London, located right next to the Willesden Green tube station. Lucky for me and my house mates it was right up the street from our house and it was a regular stop on a lazy weekend or on the way home from a night out. Just go in, ask for your chips, and expect a huge paper cone stuffed with piping hot chips and you can douse them  with bottles of salt and vinegar sitting on the counter for customers. It’s practically a meal and a comfort food that never grows old.

Start thinking of your own travel secrets because you never know if you will get tagged next!

Three Travel Bites of the Week

Another Friday, another three bites of travel out of the web:

1. If you’re going to the Travel Blog Exchange’s TBEX ’10 in New York this June, look forward to a new session called the Community Keynote. The session will highlight the best travel blog posts across nine different categories ranging from “Talking to Strangers – The People You Meet” to “In Transit – The Perils (and Joys) of Transportation.” Personally, I’ll be entering my post on my accident-prone trip to Paris in the “Trips & Falls” category (http://tr.im/Oxd0).  Even if you can’t make it to NYC, you can still submit your post for consideration. Check out their site for more information at  http://tr.im/Ox9A.

2. Facebook fan pages are a great way to give your travel blog more exposure and Travels of Adam gives tips on how to customize your fan page. Adam provides step-by-step instructions on how to create a customized welcome page which is the first thing a fan sees when they click on your page so it is important to make it as appealing as possible. I think it is awesome of him to put together these instructions and share it with everyone so visit http://tr.im/OQwV and get started.

3. I’ve started working on my Passion Board, have you? Got Passport came up with this artistic idea to cut out words or pictures from magazines that represent your passion, whether it be travel, books, music, sports, or food, and paste it all onto a poster board creating a collage. With this visual it is easier to focus on what is most important in your life – your passions. Got Passport is inviting everyone to create a Passion Board and share it on your blog and invite others, through Twitter, to get creative as well. I will be posting a picture of my Passion Board soon. Visit http://gotpassport.wordpress.com/ for more information.

Have a good weekend!
